When children experience repeated difficulty with reading and writing, they often begin to doubt their abilities−even when they are capable and motivated learners. Children who:

  • have difficulty remembering or applying letter-sound relationships

  • guess at words instead of decoding or applying known rules/strategies

  • avoid reading or become frustrated easily

  • struggle with spelling age level appropriate words

  • work hard, but are not making the progress expected for their age or grade level

Early reading difficulties rarely resolve on their own. Children who are not reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade often face long-term academic challenges and are at a significantly higher risk for disengagement or dropout.

Early, intensive intervention can change a child’s trajectory quickly. When reading confusions are addressed early-while the brain is most adaptable-children make faster progress, reestablish confidence, and avoid years of frustration.
